When the term “biodegradable sunscreen” is mentioned, people often mistaken it as the sunscreen content sold in a biodegradable bottle. For people who do not know this and had all their snorkelling, scuba diving, or other sea excursions planned out, they would be disappointed to have to cancel their adventure plans due to federal regulations regarding the use of biodegradable sunscreen. Confused, these tourists will learn that biodegradable sunscreen is not sunscreen sold in biodegradable bottles, but is instead biodegradable sunscreen sold in bottles. As a consequence, their non-biodegradable sunscreen gets confiscated.

Biodegradable sunscreen is sunscreen that is free of chemical ingredients that can cause harm to the environment. Most general and mainstream sunscreen is non-biodegradable, filled with ingredients like PABA, octinoxate, oxybenzone, 4-methylbenzylidene, camphor, and butylparaben. Although the general idea is that things that are non-biodegradable do not decompose, these ingredients do. However, it is the decomposing process of these ingredients that causes harm to the eco-system, whereby coral reefs can corrode in the interaction. At the same time, the oils from non-biodegradable sunscreen that comes off from the wearers can end up landing on coral reefs and other marine lives causing them to suffocate. The ingredients for biodegradable sunscreen, which are usually either zinc oxide or titanium oxide combined with natural ingredients, simply mixes with the sand of the ocean bed, creating no harmful reactions.

Another good thing about biodegradable sunscreen is that it is a better option for those with delicate skin like children, or those with skin allergies. Regular sunscreen usually contains PABA, which a number of people are allergic to it, so biodegradable sunscreen serves as a safe option. Of course, there is also some mainstream sunscreen that is PABA-free that they can use instead. Otherwise, both biodegradable and non-biodegradable functions rather similarly, providing protection from harmful UV-rays.

Some of the popular biodegradable sunscreen brands are such as Mexi-Tan, Caribbean Solutions, Nature’s Gate, Kiss My Face, and Hawaiian Tropical biodegradable lotions. Do be aware that sunscreen that is written PABA-free does not necessarily mean biodegradable unless stated with the red label “Biodegradable”. These biodegradable sunscreen brands cannot be found in general stores, so you will need to go to places like organic specialty stores or online shops to find them. They are typically more expensive than regular sunscreen, but are definitely a good investment for the environment. Especially if you are a regular swimmer or enjoy participating in sea excursions, having a biodegradable sunscreen will come in handy.
