Having a motivated workforce is crucial in any business environment, and it has never been more true than today. But how do you motivate a workforce so they produce their best work? The question is one that crosses many a managerial mind - more than once too. This article looks at the psychology of employee recognition as a manner of motivating your workers.

While paying your staff well is always a pre-requisite for having loyal and hardworking people who give that little bit extra - important when a particular market is very competitive - there are other ways of motivating staff. And one of these is employee recognition.

Employee recognition is a term that covers a very wide area - as so many things could in fact constitute motivation. There are actually companies that specialise in organising employee recognition initiatives - whereby certain activities are organised as reward for doing a good job.

Most businesses have targets that they need to meet in order to make profit and improve their market position. Certain sectors are more target-focussed than others. By simply linking fun or rewarding days out/activities to the meeting of such targets, many firms find that their employees are better motivated.

The kinds of rewards put forward by professional employee recognition firms vary a great deal, catering as they must for a wide range of tastes, personalities and age groups - all of which must be taken into account so that everyone is motivated by such prizes. They could be anything from cake decorating to skydiving, from a gentle massage to a day driving high performance cars.

These kind of experiences mean that work becomes more than what was previously thought of as work. By associating the everyday tasks of business with the fun times to be had as regards the employee recognition program, staff bring a more personal element into the business - adding a certain vivacity to business dealings - that may not have been present before.

The psychology of employee recognition is well documented, and this goal-oriented behaviour is something that many people respond well to. Sales teams - probably the most goal oriented section of modern business - are the likely to be the ones that are most likely to respond to this. Selling is not easy, as it requires a constant low level conflict - overcoming people's reservations about buying something - and having a thick skin and a prominent reward at the end of it are essential for success.

These are just some of the psychological factors involved in employee recognition.
