If you don't like walking alone, invite your spouse, partner, friend or neighbor to join you or start your own walking group. If you crave solitude and want to be on your own, this is the perfect workout. If you'd rather look to others for inspiration, don't go it alone. Start a walking group today!  The charities have the largest groups possible and they bring everyone together to physically gather to crowd the streets for several times a year. The charities set their dates and people spread the word to each other in a simple way; such as "Are you going to walk for the American Cancer Association?" This also applies to you if you would like to organize a group in your neighborhood by asking people to advertise your group by "word of mouth".

Just talk to your family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues at work about being a part of your group. You may be surprised how many people who are ready to lace up their walking shoes and join your group. People can post a notice in their workplace cafeteria, or place an ad in your local newspaper or even on a Homeowner Association website or newsletter.

As you are recruiting members for your group, hold a kickoff meeting. Collect e-mail addresses, phone numbers and other contact details. Then discuss:

· How often to walk

· When and where to meet

· Whether to walk indoors or outdoors

· What to do in case of bad weather

· The route to take

· The speed to walk

· The distance to cover

Be aware if by "word of mouth" you have created a large group with various fitness goals; consider breaking into smaller groups based on fitness level, fitness goals, availability or other factors.

Once your group's walking routine is established, look for ways to enhance motivation. You might choose a name for your group, design a group logo, enter charity events as a group, or set regular goals to increase walking time or intensity.

Walking in a group or alone is something you have to evaluate. It is best not to start a with good intentions than drop out and disband the group. Once you start a group you have the responsibility to keep it going.
