You're a first time writer, presumably, and want to work with a pen name. So, how do you go about getting one and using it? Here's how:
⦠Look for a name that's still unused. To check if it's available, look up the Internet, the records of the copyright office in your country and white pages.
⦠Figure out exactly how important it is to you to work with an assumed name rather than your own.
⦠Remember that once you work with a pen name, your state will expect you to register it with your municipality. So, speak to your lawyer before you take a final step.
⦠The Copyright Office in your city or town will advise you that you lose when you work with a pen name because the term is restricted to 95 years from the year of publication. One way of averting any loss to you is to register your true name with the Copyright Office.
When to choose a pen name: You should consider using a pen name or pseudonym if:
⦠Your name is difficult to read or remember
⦠If your name is similar to an established writer or personality
⦠You are scared of fame or of being criticized and so prefer hiding a mask of a pen name
⦠You are returning to a writing career after a long hiatus and don't know what to expect
Why not to use a pen name: My advice is not to go in for a pen name for the following reasons:
⦠Using your own name can help brand your name as a successful writer
⦠Your expertise can be verified on the basis of your real life experiences
⦠By using your real name, you can build a loyalty base with your readers
The pros and cons of using a pen name are right before you. You decide which is better, but remember more people know you by your real name, so why not go with it?
