Do you name your cat by the way it looks? Sounds? Plays? Should you copy other cats' names? Find something original and unusual? Or go for the practical?

If you get your creative juices working, you could have the perfect cat name in no time at all.

The color of your cat's fur can point you towards plenty of excellent cat names, and some rather less obvious ones as well. Some people - the British are famous for this - love unexpected names. I know at least one English cat called Snowball - who has beautiful black fur! And, you guessed it: Sooty was as white as snow. Those who have soft spots for British cat names might consider something like Chivers (a popular English marmalade) for your new auburn or ginger cat.

Or you can look at your cat's eyes. Just one thing - remember your kitten's blue eyes will probably change color with age (unless it's a Siamese, of course). That still leaves you Tawny, Charcoal or Slate... Why not crystal cat names? Crystals are precious, as is your cat. To get you started Jet, Topaz and Jade are special cat names.

Most of us have fallen for a helpless bundle of fur at least once. Look at you new cat: is it exceptionally cute? Cute kitten names may be a great fit, but remember to do a reality check. Will your adult cat be embarrassed by its name when it grows up? Angel, Cupcake and Mouse are great names for cute kittens but might not suit your naughty, adult, extrovert cat about town.

You may be the more practical type and like down to earth, no nonsense popular cat names that have stood the test of time. Your cat may become a Felix, Sylvester, Misty or Willow.

Think of what you like. If you're drawn to Native American, French or Egyptian cultures, research names from these societies and you will be rewarded with a lovely original cat name that speaks personally to you.

If you're up for something really unusual, Wiccan cat names might be for you. Pagan and witchy cat names are very popular these days and you'll be spoiled for choice if you're a lover of the esoteric. Ideas can come from the world of totem animals like Bear and Leopard. Magical plants have some romantic names full of history. Trees have been revered for hundreds of years and would be a great choice for the adventurous cat. Or perhaps you just like the sound of magical words like Scarab, Storm and Solstice? Take care however, Wiccan names have centuries of power and mystery behind them and a kitten called Storm or Shadow might just mature into the cat of your nightmares rather than dreams, so careful what you choose.

Many people let their children choose the cat's name and this can lead to some interesting choices, like Kalashnikov and Semtex (actual cats' names). Perhaps your children could be persuaded to pick cool cat names, funny cat names or for the teenager, unique cat names...

Perhaps you have the enjoyable problem of naming more than one cat. Many people opt for twin kitten names. Think of famous actor, singer or comedian duos, like Laurel and Hardy (if your new charges are on the comical and clumsy side), or articles that go together, like Peaches and Cream, Brandy and Soda, or, why not, Fish and Chips. Even if they're twins, you don't have to choose twin names. On the contrary, you can treat each precious feline as the individual he or she will grow up to be.

A final word: always have a little story ready about how you chose your special name, because... people will ask!
