A brand is a name, symbol, slogan or anything used to identify and distinguish a specific product, service. When someone hears about a known brand, they immediately relate its product and service or the business owner of that brand, and so on. 

 

Many marketers and business owners have been creating their brands. They attempt to make their brands the most impressive, beautiful and meaningful. Many famous brands especially in the technology are familiar to people all over the world. However, not many people know the origins and meanings of such well-known brands.

 

Jonathan Swift made up the word Yahoo used in his book 'Gulliver'sTravels' to refer to a repulsive person in appearance and action. Jerry Yang and David Filo who built up website "David and Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web selected the name as they considered themselves as yahoos.

 

Cisco is the short for San Francisco. Besides, Cisco is represented the image of famous Golden Gate in San Francisco.

 

Google is originally named "Googol", a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. However, Sergey Brin and Larry Page received the investor's first cheque made out to Google after their presentation of their project.

 

Compaq is combined from COM (computer) and PAQ.

 

Corel is rooted from the idea of Michael Cowplan, the founder, with meaning: COwplan REsearch Laboratory.

 

Co-founder Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard had to toss a coin to decide which name would be their brand, Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

 

Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore were in favor of "Moore Noyce" for their new company's name but a hotel chain had the same trademark. Thus, they settled for Intel, an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

 

Larry Ellison and Bob Oats worked on a consulting project for the CIA. The code name for the project was called Oracle (acronym for: One Real Asshole Called Larry Ellison). Then the project was cancelled, but they still kept on finishing their work and brought it to the world.

 

Micro-Soft was original and the ‘-‘was removed later on. Microsoft was an acronym of MICROcomputer SOFTware.

 

Founder Paul Galvin had this idea when his company started manufacturing radios for cars.

 

Sony is originated from ‘Sonus'. Sony is a slang of American, referring to smart and intelligent children.

 

Hotmail is initially referred to HoTMail. Founder Jack Smith had the idea of accessing email via web from computers worldwide. He attempted to make all names ending with "mail" and at last settled for hotmail (including the letters "html").
