Most mean really do develop a dislike for ties for two reasons. One, because they are so difficult to tie so that they look proper, and the other because they feel uncomfortable. When tied correctly though most of the discomfort is soon forgotten. The most common way to tie a tie is using the four in hand tie knot technique. Here are a few basic instructions to walk you through this process.

1. First you want to start with placing the tie around the underside of the shirt collar. Then let the wider end of the tie extend down below the narrow end about twelve inches. You want to be sure that the wider section is laying on top of the shorter narrow section.

2. The next step is to turn the wide section underneath the narrow section.

3. Now continue with the wide piece by overlapping the narrow piece, so it is once again laying on top of the narrow piece. Basically all you have done is wrapped the wide piece around the narrow piece keeping each piece flat. You do not want to put it so tight that it wrinkles up the edges of the tie.

4. Finally now pull the wide end in a upward direction making sure it behind the narrow piece. Then pull it through the loop that you have just made.

5. Hold the knot that you have just made and you have to put the wide piece down through the front of the loop. Smooth out any wrinkles you may have formed then gently tighten the knot adding some pressure to the sides of the knot so it will make a dimple.

6. You now need to focus on the dimple which means by squeezing the bottom of the knot you just made as you do this slide the knot up. Finally when it is positioned where you want it puff it up and make sure it looks well formed and even.

This really may sound complicated but after doing it a few times it becomes an easy task. Where most men become frustrated is getting the dimple to look right. Often the problem comes in with the initial wrapping being too tight which make the dimple to hard to work with.

For those men that really just cannot seem to master knotting a tie then there is always the alternative of purchasing pre knotted ties or clip ons. Some men don't care for these as they feel it does give the true finished look that a standard tie does. Others just hate the thought that they can't master the tie tying.

By standing in front of a mirror and practicing tie tying it will soon become an acquired skill. It is better to practice on ones self as opposed to trying it on someone else as the directions are opposite and this can become confusing.
