What endeavor, project, or company has ever succeeded by the steam of one person alone? It sounds like a cliche, but it's true that no man is an island. One will always need other people to help make a project successful. Sometimes, one individual can be considered the star of the show, but he or she didn't get there without the help of other people involved. Making things possible is one of the functions of a team; the people in a team are chosen specifically because of their skills, knowledge, and experience in order to proper the team forward.

Now it's very easy to throw people together and call them a team; the challenge is to get them to start THINKING like one. Internal conflicts, lack of leadership, a weak awareness of their roles, and lack of trust in one another are some of the issues that plague teams. Team building for some is achieved simply by engaging in activities that are not related to work; helping everyone get to know each other better is one good way to foster camaraderie among team members. After all, people who like one another and have more respect for each other will be able to work better. Building teams can also be achieved by some when the team members are forced to work closely on a challenging project; the idea is that people can effectively unite in order to meet the objectives.

Still, others find it best to work with team building consultants who formulate special seminars, workshops, and activities to build a strong, united, and efficient team. Such seminars will generally allow people to understand what makes an effective team, develop their team skills, and help them identify their weaknesses that prevent them from being a team player. Outdoor team building exercises are also an option during these workshops, ones that give people an opportunity to work with one another in another, more difficult setting.

Becoming a full-fledged team ready to throw itself into the fray and emerge successful is not the easiest thing to do. But with the aid of a good leader and clear goals, a team can develop the drive to be the best it can be.
