In today's economic climate software sellers likes ours are noticing a trend. Companies are looking for more value for there money when it comes to ERP expenditures. These companies know they need something but don't want to layout the large chunks of money for just software from the larger players in the industry. Paying for a brand name doesn't make for good business especially when you can get much more for less.

Smaller established companies don't have to pay for the hype machines or high priced over head, which of course means you don't have to pay for it either. In the end it cost is important but if the systems doesn't work you haven't saved anything.

So the key is to under stand your needs and assess not only software but software vendors on their ability to provide solid value to the to your company.

What is the value you should be looking for?

The software - High functionality, low price, capable of meeting needs of today and the future.

The last thing you want to do is replace software again, there is absolutely no value in that. There are robust and comprehensive packages out there that offer functionality you can turn off and on. Allowing your business to slowly grow into the package or jump in with both feet.

It should also be flexible, allowing your organization to change the way things are done in the software if the need arises. Customization delivers a high degree of value if used in the right areas.

The Vendor - Knowledgeable, capable and empowering.

The company you buy the software from, not necessarily the maker of the software but the organization you bought it from, needs to understand your business and the software they are selling as it pertains to your business. Knowledgeable vendors provide a high degree of value by ensuring you get it right the first time.

The vendor should be able to offer many services to you and be responsible for the results of those services. Customizations, interfaces, EDI, web-stores these are the types of things you may need currently or in the future.

Empowering, what does that have to do with ERP? There is no value in relying on a 3rd party for everything when it comes to ERP. Your vendor should be able to provide tools to enable your staff to do something's on their own. Training, writing reports, programming, project management whatever the case may be the vendor must encourage empowerment where an organization has the internal capability to do so.

Brand names are cool and the Jones's have them but how cool would you be today to get a lot more for a lot less.
