First let's define authority and talk about what being an authority does for your brand. Author-i|ty (noun) is power or influence resulting from knowledge or prestige. A person with much knowledge or experience in some field, whose information or opinion is reliable; an expert.


Wowee, isn't that a cool definition.


Being an authority gives you instant credibility, well-rounded exposure and unexpected opportunities.


Here are the top 5 ways to become an authority in your niche:


1. Develop your brand. In every industry, looks do matter. The look of your brand is the container. It's how people come to recognize you-even the construction worker is dressed for the job. However, your brand is more than looks. It's the words, the perception and your personal promise.


2. Write for a magazine column in your niche. Not an online magazine. My recommendation is that you do this for one of the top magazines in your niche. Approach them and ask them if you can write a monthly column on your topics.


I did this in the salon industry a few years ago. It proved to be such a great way to develop leads. I had salon owners calling me from around the world because of these articles. Those leads kept my pipe line full. Also, this gave me instant credibility with salon owners and consultants.


3. Write articles in your niche and submit them to online articles directories. Writing articles in your niche gives you author-status. This is not hard (don't talk yourself out of doing this). I like how Jeff Herring puts it. He says, if you can write a grocery list, you can write a three, five or seven tip articles.


As a result of writing articles, I've been approached by publications to write for them as their marketing expert.


4. Write a book. Books come in all shapes, sizes and formats. Nowadays, you have options. You can repurpose your articles into a book. One parenting coach turned all of her articles into a book. She was amazed that after writing articles consistently for four months that she was able to compile the articles, make a few tweaks and have a book written with grace and ease.


5. Create signature programs and products in your niche. People like buying programs and products. Look at companies like Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig- they all have a pre-packaged program. People like buying programs. No matter what niche you serve, you can create products and programs for your audience.
