Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season after 26 years in charge, moving upstairs to be a member of the board. Now, the English club is on the hunt for a new manager for the first time in over a quarter of a century. It's unclear who the Red Devils will choose to replace the 71-year-old Scot. Alex Ferguson has managed the team since 1986 when it was struggling for a foothold in England. Four years later, he produced his first trophy, a F.A. Cup title, but it was not until the late 1990s that Manchester United developed into one of the most recognizable brands in the world. The football club was the second-highest valued team in the world in 2013. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and loved by millions of fans across all continents, from Manchester to Manila and Montreal. During his managerial career, Sir Alex won 49 trophies including five FA Cups, four league cups and two famous Champions League titles, in 1999 and 2008. The talented coach was initially supposed to retire in 2002 but changed his mind, hung around for another decade and won six more Premier League titles. Two weeks ago, Alex Ferguson also secured his 13th Premier League title with the century-old soccer club. Apart from dominating on the pitch, he has helped build Manchester United into a huge business operation whose progress is followed on stock exchanges around the world. However, the Old Trafford club lost the top spot as the world's most valuable sports franchise to Spanish soccer club Real Madrid in this year's Forbes list.
