There is no place like the mall and department stores where the Great American Marketing Machine is best seen at work. Clothing is such an important part of what makes us positioned in this society. I have found somewhere we cross a line where wearing classic is almost acceptable, but I hate to admit that it may be when social security health plans are arriving in the mail with membership signups!
I have seen this marketing machine especially targeting the teens out there. The "mallers" whose dads cough up 100.00 every weekend to placate their teen daughters are seen paying full price for jeans at the local skateboarding store. Those of us on tight budgets are still greatly impacted. I have wondered just how to beat the heat of this and have my children be masters of their own style and look good at the local high school?
My solution is to shop only two months out of the year! What? Can you imagine only doing major shopping twice each year? This does not mean that you can't hit the mall some weekends looking for a bargain, but save your pennies for these times and your family will look good at a much lower price. Those of you who shop regularly probably already know the months: January and July. This is most effective when your family has settled into sizes because in January you are buying for next fall and in July you are buying for next spring.
It is in these months stores are clearing inventory for the upcoming lines. It is far better to buy the bulk of items then and a few updated blouses later. I have come home with $ 600.00 worth of clothing for $ 130.00. I hang it up with tags on in the closet. When the new season arrives, you are ready to go. This past year, my teen was in her favorite store in January. We purchased four pair of shorts that retailed for 44.00 a pair and paid just $ 5.00 per pair. We went early in the month so we could find her size. In this case, they had shorts out in January on clearance. Save those Christmas dollars for the next month! Your family will look mall quality for thrift store prices...and more importantly, you will be winning against the Great American Marketing Machine.
