You should make it a goal to become an expert in your field. The world admires and respects experts. People hire experts. Think about it: if you had the choice between a person who is an expert and one who is not, who would you choose to talk to or hire? If you brand yourself as an expert and do so authentically, you will be recognized and endorsed. When you are recognized and endorsed, Google will recognize you as an expert in your field. It's a powerful branding tool when you control the top results of Google!


Here are 5 reasons why you should aim to become an expert in your field:


1. Media. The media uses Google to find expert sources all the time. They look for people to quote to make their story more credible. If you are the first person to pop up on Google when a journalist types in keywords or topics, that person is very likely to give you recognition by quoting you. Being quoted by the media in turn makes you appear to be even more of an expert. It's a cycle: become enough of an expert to be quoted by the media, and your expert status will increase.


2. Customers. Every single day, thousands of people search Google for goods or services they need or want. When was the last time you searched Google and then clicked back and called someone on the fifth or sixth page instead of the first one? If you are on the first page of Google-better yet, the first result-you will get more business. People type in their keywords and the word "expert" to find people to call, and you want to be that person. Position yourself on the first page of Google and the business will come to you.


3. Job Offers. People in charge of hiring and recruiting use Google to find people like you. They use search terms like "expert" to let Google do some easy pre-screening for them. If you can make it past Google's pre-screen-make sure Google knows you're an expert-then you have already gotten one step closer to being hired. If you come up in the first results on Google, you are miles ahead of most of your peers.


4. Authority. Ranking number one shows authority. It tells people who's boss. When you come up as Google's number one search result, you tell everyone who searches you that you are the authority and the expert on this subject. People who don't even know you will trust you and come to you. People believe what they perceive; and, by being Google's number one result, you are perceived to be the top expert in the field.


5. Confidence. Knowing you are an expert, or regarded as an expert, will make you feel more confident. You will land more clients and get better jobs when you can give a presentation and feel confident about yourself and the work you have done.


These are 5 reasons why being an expert in your field is an important goal to have. It is something for which to strive, for these reasons and many more. Make it your goal to achieve expert status as soon as possible, but realize that these things take some time. It's not going to happen overnight; allow yourself enough time to really work at achieving this status. Don't get discouraged when it doesn't happen next week or next month. If you put consistent time into it, you can achieve it.
